Project Summary: The national atlas is one of the important elements of state attributes and the visiting card of the country. More than 40 years have passed since the publication of the first Atlas of Georgia (1964). The political, socio-economic and demographic situation has been changed, the ecological situation has become tense. Considering the mentioned realities, it is necessary to prepare and publish a new national atlas.
The presented project aims to prepare for the publication of the electronic version of the National Atlas of Georgia. It will present the country's location, natural conditions, resources, cultural heritage, population, farming, social sphere and ecological situation. The Atlas will provide significant assistance to the country's scientific and educational sphere. The information posted here will become an important basis for the development of the country's socio-economic development strategy and tactics.
The leading organization for the preparation of the atlas will be the Vakhushti Bagration Institute of Geography, the partner organization - Iv. Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University; Due to the complexity of the project, specialists from various scientific and research institutions of the Ministry of Education and Science will participate in the preparation of the national Atlas.
Vakhushti Bagrationi Institute of Geography has rich experience of similar projects. The first Atlas of Georgia, Vakhushti Bagrationi's Atlas of Georgia, Resorts Atlas, School Atlas and many others were prepared and published under Institute authority. The scientific potential and qualifications of the Institute are the solid guarantee of preparing the National Atlas of Georgia at the level of modern requirements.
The National Atlas will be a complex cartographic work of a scientific-reference nature. The modern scientific achievements in various fields presented in it will contribute to the assessment and rational use of the resource potential of the country; creation of various targeted projects and attraction of foreign investments.
The volume of the atlas is determined by 180 pages (50 pages - text, 130pages- maps, working scale: 1:1 000 000, 1:1 500 000, 1:2 000 000, 1:2 500 000, 1:3 000 000, 1:3 500,000). It takes 3 years to prepare for publication.
The National Atlas will be created using geographic information technologies, which allow for a new presentation and constant updating of some traditional methods of designing the thematic maps. It is successfully used in many countries of the world. With their help, different types of databases will be created and the potential of the country will be determined.
